A set of short explainer videos has been released showing how Nature-Based Solutions can help cities tackle the effects of climate change – examples from the EU-funded URBAN GreenUP project.
The videos feature three cities from URBAN GreenUP: Valladolid in Spain, Liverpool in the United Kingdom and Izmir in Turkey. As many other cities around the globe, they are suffering the consequences of climate change and increasing urbanisation. Examples include high temperatures, heavy traffic, air pollution, biodiversity loss and storm flooding.
As part of URBAN GreenUP, they embarked on a journey to tackle these challenges through urban interventions inspired by nature, or Nature-Based-Solutions (NBS). The implemented NBSs, such as green roofs and walls and ecological corridors, will improve air quality, minimise heatwaves, act as carbon stores, help mitigate climate change, reduce flooding disasters overcoming the adaptation to climate change and be an important habitat for wildlife. However, the implementation of NBS will not be enough to fight the consequences of climate change and a global effort is required. For this reason, the URBAN GreenUP project has developed a methodology to support the re-naturing of cities, which is presented in this video and has been tested in two other European cities (Ludwigsburg in Germany and Mantova in Italy), along with three non-European cities (Medellín in Colombia, Chengdu in China and Quy Nhon in Vietnam)
The methodology includes four phases: (i) analysing of the city, its needs and capacities, and the involvement of relevant stakeholders; (ii) identifying suitable NBSs and deciding where to implement them and how to measure their impact; (iii) setting the targets and analysing budget and legal constraints; (iv) Implementing and monitoring the actions.
The videos have been produced by Fondazione iCons, the URBAN GreenUP partner leading the communication and dissemination activities of the project.
