The Mersey Forest, partner of the URBAN GreenUP project, has provided the contribution “Using urban catchment forestry to tackle flood risk” to Cities Alive: Water for People, a report published by Arup and presenting innovative ways to make cities more sustainable by using water. Cities Alive: Water for People was successfully launched at the International Water Association’s World Water Congress in Tokyo on the 18th September 2018.
Mersey Forest’s contribution presents their programme to develop a solid business case based on the use of trees and woodlands to mitigate the occurrence of flooding and improve water quality in the Mersey Basin (UK).
“URBAN GreenUP will be the first large scale monitored Urban Catchment Forestry intervention in the UK and it will demonstrate the use of nature-based solutions to help us tackle urban flood risk issues.” says Paul Nolan, director of Mersey Forest.
As stated by Clare Olver from Mersey Forest, reducing the flood risk also helps to reassure local communities and businesses that their properties are safer. This is an example of how the introduction of Nature-Based Solutions in urban landscapes can improve our lives from multiple points of views.
