ABOUT THE SESSION:
“Re-naturing cities through Nature-Based Solutions” - Mrs Rosa Huertas (director) and Mrs Alicia Villazán (project manager) – City of Valladolid
While the conservation and sustainable development community considers Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to be a strong method of addressing climate change and its associated challenges in urban environments, there is still a tendency to implement mainly traditional engineering and architectural solutions. In order to address in depth, the aforementioned needs and demonstrate the potential of the NBS to contribute to the main cities’ challenges, URBAN GreenUP aims at obtaining a tailored methodology to support the co-development of Renaturing Urban Plans focused on climate change mitigation and adaptation and efficient water management, and to assist in the implementation of NBS in an effective way. Examples of the planned initiatives in Valladolid are the deployment of green bike and pedestrian routes, the installation of green infrastructure, parks and urban farming facilities, the usage of smart soils and bio pollutant filters, as well as the construction of a floodable park and the implementation of sustainable drainage systems, which reduce the impact of floods and for irrigation purposes.
